Our Special Friends is a West Suffolk-based charity supporting people through difficult times, where animal companionship plays a crucial role in helping them cope.
Each year, they support over 600 cases, with around 1,100 people and 500 animals benefiting from their services. Behind this is a dedicated network of 160 volunteers, helping to deliver vital support across the community. From dog walking and pet fostering to friendly home visits, their volunteers step in when people need it most. Because often, it’s not just about caring for an animal, it’s about caring for the person behind it. The charity, was founded by veterinary surgeon, Belinda (Bin) Johnston, to protect and nurture the unique bond between people and their pets, especially when life becomes challenging.
As Bin shared with us: “There’s a point where life can feel overwhelming for anyone. When that happens, even the strongest bonds can feel harder to manage. That’s when support really matters.”
Our Special Friends applied for £2,607.82 from our Community Investment Grant to fund essential equipment that keeps the team connected and able to respond quickly. From laptops to office tools, these resources might seem simple, but they play a vital role in making sure support continues to reach those who need it.
Much of their work happens quietly, but its impact is deeply felt. Whether it’s helping someone arrange temporary fostering during a difficult time or supporting a resident whose health has changed, the focus is always on keeping people and their pets together wherever possible.
“We believe in fostering to reunite. We work closely with both the owner and their pet to find the right solution.”
Bin also encourages all dog and cat owners to complete an Animal CV and an Advance Care Plan. These outline how a pet should be cared for by others if needed and help plan for the future if an owner is no longer able to look after them. Both resources are available on their website.
As demand for their services continues to grow, so does the need for community support. At its heart, this is what community is all about, people supporting people, neighbours helping neighbours, and making sure no one has to face difficult times alone.
You can be part of this incredible work. Andrew, who supports fundraising and partnerships, sees the impact of the charity every day and the difference that community support makes:
“It’s those small, everyday acts of kindness that add up. Whether someone gives their time, donates or simply spreads the word, it all helps us reach more people who need support, and those who want to give it.”
This project is a great reminder that our Community Investment Grant isn’t just about large-scale projects. It can also support the essential tools and resources that help organisations continue their vital work in the community.
