Our new Sustainability and Social Value Strategy

We’ve launched our new Sustainability and Social Value Strategy, setting out how we’ll work to create positive environmental, social and economic benefits for our residents and communities.

For us, sustainability is about more than reducing carbon emissions. It’s also about supporting strong, connected communities, helping residents access opportunities and making a positive difference to the places where we work.

Our new strategy supports our new Purpose and Plan and our vision to be the trusted provider of good quality homes and services.

Earlier this year, as part of our Homes and Communities Consultation, we asked you to share your views on a number of topics to help us shape our approach. We asked you:

“What one thing could we do outside of our usual landlord services that would have the biggest impact on you and your community?”

We received 370 responses from residents who rent their homes and 17 responses from shared owners.

The most popular answers were:

  1. Wellbeing events
  2. Support with household items
  3. Financial advice and support
  4. More work with young people
  5. Employment support

You also shared some great ideas about what could make a difference in your communities.

These included:

  • More apprenticeship opportunities for young people
  • Community events such as street parties
  • Better access to financial and wellbeing support
  • Spaces where people can meet and make connections
  • Activities for children and young people and better transport options for people who don’t drive

Your feedback will help us decide where we can make the biggest difference.

Our strategy has four main areas:

We’ll look at how we can reduce the environmental impact of the way we work. This includes reducing waste, improving recycling and reuse, increasing the use of electric vehicles and looking at ways to reduce our carbon emissions.

We’ll use your feedback and local insight to help us invest in activities that benefit residents and communities.

This includes developing our furniture reuse project, which is already helping residents access smaller furniture items and household goods.

We’ll also explore new projects with partners that could support health and wellbeing, digital inclusion, employment, community connection and access to services.

We want to understand the difference our work makes.

Over the coming year, we’ll improve how we measure the impact of our sustainability and social value work. This will help us understand what is working well and where we can do more.

The way we work with suppliers and partners can also bring benefits to our communities.

We’ll look for opportunities to create social value through our contracts, including supporting local businesses and working with suppliers to deliver projects that benefit residents.

What happens next?

This strategy builds on work we’re already doing, but it also gives us a clearer and more joined up approach to sustainability and social value.

We’ll continue to listen to residents and use your feedback to help shape our work.

We’ll also report on our progress each year, so we can show you what we’ve achieved and where we still have more to do.

Thank you to everyone who shared their views with us. Your feedback is helping us make sure our plans focus on the things that matter to you and your communities.
