At their residential home in Thetford, the team at Mencap wanted to create a safe, welcoming space for their residents, somewhere that promotes comfort, independence and joy.
Mencap’s residential care services are built around small, high-quality homes, thoughtfully adapted to meet the individual needs of each person they support. It’s a personalised approach that puts people firmly at the centre.
With the right environment, encouragement and access to technology, people are supported to learn new skills, build confidence and grow in independence. For some, residential care can also be a stepping stone towards supported living, opening even more opportunities for the future. Mencap also supports people with more complex needs, including those with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well as autism and behaviours that challenge. Their structured, compassionate approach helps people to stay safe and thrive, with teams delivering care that is not only effective, but truly meaningful.
Tracey and the team in Thetford identified a need for a sensory room in their Foxglove building, a calming and engaging environment where residents could relax, regulate and explore. They applied for £3,500 from our Community Investment Grant fund to bring this vision to life. The room, once used for storage, has now been transformed into a vibrant and supportive space that plays an important role in daily life. With sensory toys, lighting and a projector, it encourages interaction and provides comfort for those who may find things more challenging.
And there’s more to come. “This room is by no means finished; we have also been lucky enough to receive a grant from Breckland Council alongside the funding from Havebury,” said Tracey. “This means we can continue to develop the space and better support individual needs where possible. ”The impact of this project goes far beyond the room itself. It’s about creating opportunities for self-expression, for comfort and for a better quality of life. This project is a great example of how community funding can make a real difference, supporting organisations like Mencap to continue delivering person-centred care in environments that truly feel like home.
