Have you been thinking about moving home? Maybe it’s for a new job, more space or simply to be closer to friends and family.

To support residents who wish to move home, we offer and support mutual exchanges. A mutual exchange allows you to ‘swap’ your home with another council or housing association resident.

We are often asked how residents can find homes they would like to swap with. Many people find exchange opportunities through social media or word of mouth, but we also recommend registering with House Exchange. This allows you to advertise your home and view available homes free of charge.

There are thousands of people across the UK looking to swap their homes, so your ideal home could be right around the corner.

You can register at www.houseexchange.org.uk, where the site will match you with other residents who are looking to exchange. The website helps you to search for homes, find matches and contact other council or housing association residents. There is also a free House Exchange app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, so you can search where ever is convenient for you.

Important things to consider

• You can upload up to five photos of your home to your advert. Adding photos increases your chances of finding a swap, as it allows other users to see your home more clearly. Make sure each room looks its best before taking pictures.
• House Exchange offers a useful tool that helps you create a description by selecting options that apply to your home. Alternatively, you can write your own description if you prefer. Both options can be found in the ‘Update my advert’ section, where you can also add key features such as a garden or balcony. The more detail you include, the more your advert will stand out

Once you are registered, check your matches and start messaging other users. Arranging viewings is a great first step in your House Exchange journey.
