Firework season

As the evenings get darker, we start to think about fireworks, bonfires and celebrations. Whether you’re celebrating Bonfire Night, Diwali or New Year, we want you to enjoy the occasion safely.

Here are a few simple things you can do to help keep yourself, your family and your neighbours safe this season.

Where possible, we encourage you to attend organised and managed bonfire and firework displays. These approved events ensure that you can enjoy the celebrations safely.

  • Think about the weather – the wind can play a huge part in the safety of any event
  • Keep wheelie bins and combustible materials away from the area
  • Remove any dry vegetation, cardboard, or old furniture from gardens and driveways
  • Never use petrol, paraffin, or other accelerants to start a bonfire. These can cause fires to get out of control quickly
  • Only burn dry materials to reduce smoke and avoid burning aerosols, foam, or paint, as these can produce toxic fumes or explode
  • Only buy fireworks from a reputable seller
  • Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode
  • Build your bonfire well away from buildings, sheds, fences, trees, and overhead cables. Always check for wildlife before lighting the fire.
  • Once your bonfire is lit, keep a bucket of water or hose nearby in case of emergencies and never leave the fire unattended.
  • Keep pets indoors
  • Never give sparklers to children under five years old, as they are too young to understand the danger.
  • When the sparkler goes out, place it hot-end-down into a bucket of cold water or sand.
  • Hold the sparkler at arm’s length away from your body and face while lighting and burning.
