Plug-in solar – What you need to know

Plug-in solar panels, sometimes called plug-and-play or balcony solar, are small solar systems that can generate electricity for your home. They are designed to plug into a standard household socket. 

From today (27 August 2026), plug-in solar systems can legally be purchased in the UK. However, this does not mean that every system is suitable for every home, or that they are completely risk-free.  

Safety first 

As with any electrical equipment, there are safety risks if a plug-in solar system is poor quality, incorrectly installed or used in the wrong way. These can include fire, overheating and electric shock. 

If you are considering plug-in solar: 

  • Only buy from a reputable retailer or manufacturer. Avoid unbranded products or buying from unknown third-party sellers on online marketplaces.  
  • Look for products that meet the relevant UK safety requirements, including appropriate UKCA or CE markings.  
  • Never connect a plug-in solar system using an extension lead, adaptor or multiway socket. This can increase the risk of overheating and fire.  
  • Do not alter, repair or modify the equipment, cables or plug yourself.  
  • Make sure cables are protected from damage and are not trapped in doors or windows or run under carpets.  
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.  
  • If your home is older or you are unsure about the condition of your electrics, you should have them checked by a qualified electrician before using plug-in solar.  

If you notice a burning smell, overheating, buzzing, damaged cables or repeated electrical tripping, stop using the system immediately and report the issue to the supplier or to us. If there is a fire or immediate danger, move to a safe place and call 999.
