Bury In Bloom – Community Investment Grant

Bury in Bloom was awarded £4,745 from our Community Investment Grant to make a central street in Bury St Edmunds more vibrant.

Founded by the Bury Society in 1986, Bury in Bloom has played a key role in establishing the town as one of the country’s leading floral destinations. Now, with support from our grant, the group has turned its attention to Eastgate Street, a key route into town that’s ready for a refresh. Chris Wiley, coordinator of Bury in Bloom, has been involved with the group since January 2023. Having lived in Bury St Edmunds all his life, he brings both passion and local pride to the role.

With funding from our grant, new self-watering planters have already been installed along the railings towards the end of Eastgate Street. These are filled with vibrant flowers, creating a colourful welcome for visitors arriving in the town, or a bright send-off for those heading home.

But the improvements don’t stop there. Chris and the team have exciting plans for the area, including a unique installation on the patch of land at the junction with Shakers Lane.

“Our aim is to inject a flush of colour into Eastgate Street. We have exciting ideas, including a floral display containing used toilets, with a rain chain,” Chris explains.

The aim is to brighten up the road between Angel Hill and the Barton Road roundabout, including painted bollards, planters and floral pyramids.

“We want local businesses and residents to take real pride in where they live and work, and we hope our plans, and our hard-working volunteers, will help build that momentum.”

Alongside this work, Bury in Bloom is also launching its Pride in My Street initiative. The scheme encourages residents to come together to improve their local area, whether that’s through planting, weeding, litter picking, sign cleaning or creating wildlife-friendly spaces.

Streets can submit photos of their efforts for a chance to win a share of £1,000 in ‘Our Bury St Edmunds’ gift cards, which will be split equally between households on the winning street. Not only does this reward community spirit, but it also helps keep money within the local economy.
