National Careers Week 2026

National Careers Week (NCW) is a one-week celebration of careers guidance and free resources in education across the UK. The aim is to provide a focus for careers guidance activity at an important stage in the academic calendar to help support young people develop awareness and excitement about their future pathways.

You can find out more here.

To celebrate this year’s National Careers Week, we wanted to share some stories from our team members. From how they got into their career, to career changes and advice to young people who are just starting out.

Alice – Assistant Director of Housing and Customer Services

Alice is our assistant director of housing and customer services.

“I love my role because every day is different, and the work my team delivers is genuinely worthwhile, something I’m proud to be part of. I’ve built confidence in my role through experience, getting involved wherever I could and always asking questions. That way, I knew I was constantly learning and developing.

I did take a two-year break from housing when I joined Suffolk Constabulary under their detective entry scheme. I absolutely loved it, but when an opportunity came up to return to housing, it was too good to miss.

To get to where I am now, I’ve worked my way up. I started with work experience, then became a team leader, a manager, head of housing, and now my current role. Each step has helped me better understand how I can support my team and serve our residents. My time in the police also strengthened my resilience and taught me the importance of staying calm under pressure.

If you’re just starting your career, I’d say: soak it all up. Be a sponge. Ask questions. Stay curious, enthusiastic, kind and helpful. Take the time to understand the whole organisation, a positive attitude really does go a long way.

If I had to describe my career journey in one word, it would be: rewarding.”

Imogen – Housing Officer

Imogen is one of our housing officers withing our Neighbourhood and Estates team.

“I recently stepped into my current role as a housing officer at Havebury. The role is incredibly varied, it would take pages to list everything we do. What I’ve learned so far is that every day is a learning day. Our residents place their trust in us, and the teamwork within the Neighbourhood and Estates team is truly amazing.

Outside of work, I have a second family through Scouting. I’ve been a Scout Leader for nine years this year, and being part of young people’s journeys, watching their confidence grow and seeing them experience new things, is something I’ll always be grateful for.

In my role, I’m never afraid to ask questions. That has been one of the biggest confidence boosts for me. I’ve had a few jobs over the years that felt like ‘just jobs’, but now I feel like I’ve found a vocation.

If you’re just starting your career, I’d say knowledge is power, but you’ll never know everything, so don’t put that pressure on yourself. And if I had to describe my career so far in one word, it would be: fun!”

Pete – Facilities Coordinator

Pete is our facilities coordinator.

“I started my career in the military, which gave me the opportunity to take on a variety of roles while relocating around the world. In my earlier years, I maintained fuel system components in fighter jets and cargo aircraft, roles that required strict adherence to health and safety due to their inherent risks.

Later, as a civil engineer operations manager, I managed customer service teams coordinating facilities maintenance across a wide range of buildings. The combination of safety-focused operational experience and customer-facing responsibilities has given me a strong foundation in facilities management.

In my current role, I’ve built my confidence by getting to know other teams and understanding their responsibilities. This really helps when supporting residents who visit the office for different reasons, particularly as we actively welcome them to come in and speak to a member of the team.

If I had to describe my career so far in one word, it would be: diverse.”
