Residents at Lucy Adams House recently took part in a six-week block of art classes, giving them the opportunity to try something new, learn creative skills, and focus on their wellbeing.
The sessions were led by local artist Trudi Edmunds, who worked with residents to introduce the fundamentals of drawing through a relaxed, supportive approach. Over the six weeks, residents explored a range of basic art techniques and built their confidence step by step.
The course began with a simple but thoughtful exercise, ‘drawing an apple your own way’. This allowed everyone to approach the activity creatively, regardless of their experience or skill level.
From there, each session focused on a different aspect of drawing, including:
- Understanding pencils and how they can be used to create different effects
- Learning about erasers and how they can help shape and refine a drawing
- Exploring different types of paper
- Planning a drawing before starting
The final session revisited the original apple drawing, giving residents the chance to apply the new techniques and skills they had learned throughout the course.
Residents shared that they really enjoyed the classes, particularly the opportunity to learn something new while spending time in a relaxed and creative environment. Many said the sessions helped them fill their time positively and expressed interest in continuing art in the future.
Art can play an important role in supporting wellbeing. Creative activities can help people relax, build confidence and provide a healthy distraction from day-to-day worries. For many residents at Lucy Adams House, the classes offered a chance to recharge, focus their minds and experience the sense of achievement that comes with learning a new skill.
Trudi said she felt privileged to be invited to host the classes.
“It has been incredibly rewarding working with the residents at Lucy Adams House. Art can help build confidence, refresh the mind and give people a sense of pride in what they create. I’m very happy to have been part of something so positive.”
