Barbecue safety

Location, Location, Location:

  • Downwind of where you plan to eat is usually best. Always consider how your neighbours might be affected by the smoke and smell.
  • Ensure that the barbecue is well away from anything that might catch fire; fences, sheds, garden furniture, and things like that – and if your home has timber cladding, keep the barbecue at least a couple of metres away.
  • If you have a balcony, please don’t use a barbecue on it; it’s too risky and could cause a fire

Preparing and using your barbecue:

  • Remove all the grease, fat, and any remaining charcoal that built up last year so it can’t cause a fire.
  • If you have a gas barbecue, check that the gas hose is still in good condition – no cracks or splits in the hose, and all connections are nice and tight.
  • Check that no insects or bugs have set up home in any of the tubes or burners.
  • If you’re using a charcoal barbecue, only use charcoal starter fluid for grilling and never add lighter fluid to hot coals.
  • For gas barbecues, open the lid before turning on the gas to prevent gas build-up.

Fire Safety:

  • Never leave a lit grill unattended.
  • Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
  • In case of a grease fire, do not use water to extinguish it, as it can cause the flames to spread. Instead, close the grill lid and turn off the gas.
  • Think carefully about where you store your charcoal or gas bottle. If you live in a block of flats, please don’t store gas or charcoal anywhere in the communal areas of your building. We advise you not to keep them in your home, particularly a gas bottle – the risk is too great.

Disposable barbecues

If you plan to use a disposable barbecue, please take great care; they can be particularly dangerous. Never use any barbecue – even disposable ones – indoors or in enclosed spaces – the fumes can kill you. If you use them outdoors, please choose a spot where the heat will not cause damage, and there’s no risk of anything else catching fire.

Here’s hoping we all have a great summer and lots of safe and enjoyable barbecues. We’ve got more fire safety tips here.

Grounds maintenance – meet team one

The team meet at their depot in Ridley Road, Bury St Edmunds between 7:30 and 8 am. As the lead hand, Jasmine looks at the jobs on our system and sees the order in which they are allocated. The team then work together to make sure the trailer has everything it needs for the day’s jobs.

When on site, they’ll take a ‘before’ picture, work through their list of jobs and take another photo once they’ve finished.

Here is a little bit more about them:

Jasmine, grounds maintenance lead hand: Jasmine started her career at Havebury as a ranger in our Neighbourhood & Estates team. When this opportunity came up, she grabbed it with both hands.

“We have a great team mentality, and I learn so much from Kevin because he has worked in the industry for 20 years. James is so hands on and really brings his own innovative thoughts to the team. We all have such different backgrounds, but we get on really well, which makes the job so much more enjoyable.”

Kevin is one of our grounds maintenance operatives: He has 20 years of horticultural experience and a wealth of knowledge. Over his career, has worked for other housing associations and councils.

Grounds maintenance operatives are used to being out in all conditions, but when asked, Kevin said:

“Autumn is my favourite season, as the madness of summer is over, but there is still so much to do; it just feels calmer”. Kevin said he had received some lovely comments while out and about: “Those compliments really give you job satisfaction.”

James is another one of our grounds maintenance operatives – James previously worked for himself in the building trade. He is used to getting hands on with whatever task he is doing; although this is his first job of this kind, he has a great can-do attitude and is keen to learn more. He says he really enjoys the role:

“I get up in the morning, and I look forward to going to work. I’m really enjoying it.”

Grounds maintenance

Last year, we made the decision to deliver our grounds maintenance services ourselves. This was for a number of reasons – you told us you preferred it when our in-house teams carried out works and services, and we also wanted to have better control over the quality of this key service.

In February 2024, we launched our new team, who are now out and about in your communities. Our operations manager, Mark Leeds, has built a great team, who are making good progress in getting to know the areas they work in as well as meeting some of you.

Here is some feedback that we’ve already received from our residents.

  • “I just wanted to say thank you for cutting the shrub opposite my flat. It has made a lot
of difference to the light I now get through my living room window. I’m very glad it was finally cut back! I look forward to seeing the difference Havebury will make.”
  • “I would like to offer thanks and appreciation to Havebury for listening to feedback and concerns regarding the inconsistencies around the previous grounds maintenance. Having taken the time to talk to your new in-house team and observe their work, I am thrilled with the outcome.”

What our service will look like in the summer

  • Grass cutting (cut & collect) – we will cut your grass and take away the cutting every three weeks.
  • Grass cutting (cut & drop) – we will cut your grass, leaving a fine layer of grass cuttings on grassy areas, which provides more nutrients for the soil every four weeks.
  • Grass cutting (rough grass) – this tends to include verges, ditch banks, field margins and other less used areas, which we will aim to cut every 12 weeks.
  • Hardstandings – these are grounds surfaced with a hard material for parking vehicles on and we will aim to attend every four weeks to tidy up any weeds, and perform general upkeep of
    the area.
  • Shrub beds & soft standings – these are designed to frame larger plants, soften the formal lines of buildings, or improve drainage in waterlogged areas, and can be barked or shingled zones. We will aim to attend every eight weeks.
  • Reactive grounds maintenance – this is anything that is reported to us by our residents or anything we see whilst out and about, that we need to do before our next round. When something is reported to us, we will aim to have the issue resolved in five working days. We’ll confirm if any follow-on appointment is required after the initial visit.

During the summer, you may see areas of grass that look a little longer, or it may look as if we have missed some parts. Don’t worry, this is not the case. We don’t like to cut wildflowers when they are flowering, as it disrupts bees and other wildlife. We’ll cut them once the season has finished.

  • Cleaning – this includes checking and cleaning bin stores, when appropriate. These will be done every four weeks, or as and when required.
  • Reactive cleaning – is anything that is reported to us by our residents or anything we see whilst out in our communities, that we need to do before our next cleaning round. This could include graffiti, bin spillages that are causing a hazard, or any fly-tips. When something is reported to us, we will aim to have the issue resolved in five working days. We’ll confirm if any follow-on appointment is required after the initial visit.
  • ‘Sharps’ removal – when we have a report of a ‘sharp’, such as a needle, weapon or glass, in any of our communities, we will aim to get this removed within 24 hours. We will aim to have a resolution as soon as reasonably practicable.

If you have an issue you would like to report

  • Log the issues via our resident app, myHavebury, by visiting my.havebury.com
  • Email the team via myarea@havebury.com
  • Call our Neighbourhood and Estates team on 0300 3300 900, choosing options 3 and 1 or enter extension number 7333 when prompted.

Priors Estate community day

Tuesday 9 April
The Priors Estate, Bury St Edmunds
10.00 am – 2.00 pm

We have refreshed our community days for 2024 as we look to be more sustainable and continue our work with local charities.

If you have any old furniture that is in good condition, we would love to help you donate it to local charities. Please email our Engagement team at engagement@havebury.com, or you can call 0300 3300 900 and choose extension number 7316 when prompted to discuss this further.

At the community day, we are also looking to have a toy swap and clothing stand, so if you have any toys that your children have outgrown or clothing you no longer wear, please bring them along on the day.

Get rid of your rubbish

We will be providing a small skip for any items that can be disposed of. Please be mindful that this skip is to benefit your whole community, so we may need to limit the amount of items each person disposes of. Once it’s full, we won’t be able to take anymore.

Talk to our team

Our teams will be available to answer any queries or questions you have about your home or community. Our teams will also be going around litter picking – you can see the routes below and you are welcome to join them!

We will be based on Ashwell Road, in the green space in front of the playpark. You are welcome to join us litter picking along any of the above routes. We will make a start at 10.30 am, but please don’t worry if you can’t make it at this time, we will be here until 2 pm. The Rural Coffee Caravan will also join us, so you can grab a drink to enjoy the day.

Other activities on the day

We will also hold an Easter egg hunt for our younger residents around the estate and decorate Easter biscuits and colouring. The Priors Community Hub will organise a poster competition for children to discourage fly-tipping in your area.

Could you volunteer to help at the community day? Give our Engagement team a call on 0300 3300 900 and enter extension number 7316 when prompted or send an email to engagement@havebury.com

It’s with great sadness that we share the news that our assistant director of ICT, Paul Rowley, passed away last week.

He transformed the organisation digitally for our team and residents and was the driving force behind the in-house development of our resident-facing app, myHavebury.

He has been key in keeping Havebury connected, protected, and forward-thinking.

His passion for our sector and his knowledge of ICT were evident to everyone who worked with him.

Everyone at Havebury will deeply miss Paul, and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Movement is important for our mental health, but so many of us struggle to move enough. We know there are many different reasons for this, so this Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to help people find moments for movement in their daily routines. Going for a walk in your neighbourhood, putting on your favourite music and dancing around the living room, chair exercises when you’re watching television—it all counts!

We understand how difficult it can be to get help with your mental health. Below, we have listed some supported services across the counties in which we have homes. Your GP will support most people with mental health needs or refer them to mental health services.

  • If you need an emergency service, such as an ambulance, please dial 999.
  • If you need urgent medical advice, you can call the NHS on 111.
  • You can talk to Samaritans anytime on 116 123.

You can also use ‘Hub of Hope’ to find a full list of services in your area.

He was a skilled carpenter who always went above and beyond for our residents and colleagues. He’ll be greatly missed.

Our social media pages have been flooded with lovely messages about Steve. It’s clear that everyone will miss him as much as we do.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone that knew him.
